Design Principles Project 2 - Sense of Place

Project 2 - Sense of Place

Lecture

Identify a space which connects to you, is a part of your memories and personality. Focus on the place and how it is perceived. How should the audience experience the work to best replicate the feeling of the space.

Visual Research

When thinking of a place that holds a lot of meaning for me, I immediately think of my room. While I know it is small, my room is cluttered with knick-knacks and carries a lot of my personality.

I wanted to capture the feeling of being cozy in my room. I definitely couldn't do that by just drawing out the layout of my room. But I remembered watching a game called Unpacking that I could take inspiration from.

The entire game showcases rooms in this cuboid style and I figured I could show my room in a similar way but at a different angle.

Idea Exploration

I started out with a floor plan of the main furniture in my room so that I could figure out how to fit everything into the design without making it look too cramped.

After that, I made several sketches to see which angle would suit the design best. In the end, I chose a similar angle to Fig 2.2b.

The final sketch of the room was of the same angle but from a different perspective to better reflect my room. I had also added items that decorated my walls and desk to get a feel for how cluttered I could make the room without it becoming too messy.

To show the atmosphere of the room at different times of the day, I wanted to create a gif transitioning through different lighting. To do so, I painted the base room design with flat colours. I also used a dark grey gradient for the backdrop of the design to make the room stand out.

Final Outcome & Rationale

My room gives me the feeling of being bundled immovably in a blanket. I tried to stay mostly true to the layout of my actual room to capture that feeling. I also used a lot of shadows because the curtains in my room filter the light and I feel that a slightly dim room feels more cozy. The variety in the objects around the room also gave the design a more organic feel.

Reflection

This project was very fun because I got to play with light and shadow a lot. I learnt to not focus too much on the tiny details and look at the overall vibe of the design more to achieve the effect I wanted.
