Digital Photography & Imaging - Week 1

Week 1 - 01/09/2022

LECTURE

We joined the Google Classroom for this module and had a brief lecture as an introduction to this topic. The lecture covered why we need Photoshop, how people used photograph manipulation using negatives before Photoshop existed and tips on how to improve at graphic design.

We need Photoshop for various reasons including but not limited to: expressing our creativity, creating graphic designs, restoration of old images, integrating graphics with text artistically, making use of brushes, changing photo colours, and rectifying mistakes in photographs.

Various tips on how to be a successful graphic designer included: follow tutorials, experiment, memorize keyboard shortcuts, try to replicate the work of others, participate in design competitions, subscribe to online galleries, use smart objects for design, scale artworks and proportions, use actions to personalize work, and organize files properly.

TUTORIAL

We were briefed on what to expect for our assignments based on the work of our seniors. We were also instructed to set up our e-portfolio, create a Pinterest board for this module and play the Bezier game. I have played it before but I still enjoy figuring out how to play it more efficiently.

PRACTICAL

We were instructed to find 3 graphic designs from Pinterest that we liked and describe what we liked about them.

Cookie Cat infographic fanart by Daria Rhodes

This is a fanart of one of the fictional foods in the cartoon Steven Universe. I like it because it is very simple and cute. It utilizes 3 main colours and clearly shows the information it intends to convey. The shapes are also simple and rounded which gives the same cartoon-y feel as the media it is based on.

Poster of 'Kill Your Darlings' movie

This is a poster of the movie ‘Kill Your Darlings’. This poster is very mysterious. The composition of it is simple yet it effectively draws you in to learn more about the movie. The light cast on the two characters in the foreground highlights them enough to stand out against the relatively light background. It is an interesting poster that makes me want to watch the movie.

Modern Weekly Style cover feat. Dua Lipa

This is a cover from the magazine Modern Weekly Style featuring Dua Lipa. The way the photo of Dua Lipa is edited reminds me of a hologram or ghostly apparition. She is seemingly glowing against the plain black background. The headline text is also very dynamic. When put together it is as if she has sprung up out of a body of water.
