Project 2: Digital Imaging Exercises & Product Shooting

Project 2A
Digital Imaging Exercise 1

For the first part of the exercise, we are learning to use Photoshop to insert a subject into a background and matching the colour and quality.

Image 1.1: Hearst Mansion photograph, Week 6 (06/10/2022)

Image 1.2: Shazam poster, Week 6 (06/10/2022)

This is the outcome from following the tutorial and adding Shazam to the image.

This is the outcome with my own photo taking the place of Shazam.

Digital Imaging Exercise 2

For the second part of the exercise, we are learning how to recolour black and white images to make them colour images again. The first couple of images are tutorials to learn different techniques of colouring the images.
This first version was done by painting over the photographs using the brush tool and then changing the blending mode of those layers to soft light.

The second version used the eyedropper tool to pick out colours from other images and apply those colours using the selection tool and fill bucket before changing the blending mode to soft light.

Image 2.2: Black and white photograph of a woman (left) and recoloured version of the same photograph (right), Week 7 (13/10/2022)

This final version was for us to apply what we had learnt onto an image of our choosing from the group of images provided to us. I used a mix of the above techniques to recolour this image.

Project 2B: Double Exposure

This part of the project focused on the method of Photoshop known as double exposure. Following the tutorial, this is the original image we are meant to edit using double exposure.

Image 3.1: Original portrait image, Week 5 (29/09/2022)

After following the step by step guide given to us in the tutorial slides, this is end result of the double exposure tutorial.

Following the above exercise, we have to create our own double exposure portrait using our own photo as the subject. I took a photo of myself at home using a phone stand. Below is the process of my own double exposure portrait.

Project 2C: Conceptual Product Photoshoot

For this part of the project, we are combining two separate images to create a surreal product photoshoot. To start with, we had to research good photo manipulation examples on Pinterest. Here are some of the examples.

Image 4.1 & 4.2: Photo manipulation examples from Pinterest, Week 7 (13/10/2022)

After this we had to explain our idea and come up with a sketch that showcased our idea. My idea was to combine a jigsaw puzzle box and the inside of an oven door.

Image 4.3: Sketch of my photo manipulation idea, Week 7 (13/10/2022)

In week 7, we took pictures of our products in the studio for the sake of better lighting and to learn to use a DSLR camera. Here are the results of the photoshoot.

Additionally, I took my own picture of the oven I have at home. Due to its size, I could not take it far but I managed to take the picture in the brightest area in the kitchen at least.

I combined these images in Photoshop and here is the result.

Image 4.8: Final photo manipulation result, Week 8 (20/10/2022)

I changed the background to a plain light orange to contrast the blue of the box. The manipulation makes the box look much deeper than it actually is. I also edited the glass of the oven door to look slightly see through and show the edges of the puzzle box.

REFLECTION

Exploration: Throughout this project, I discovered many features of Photoshop that I had never used before. I have used Photoshop for a while but mainly as a painting software rather than as a photo editing software so this experience has been rather eye-opening.

Observations: Photoshop has many ways of creating the same result so it is worth looking at various different tutorials to see which method fits best for your individual style and which method is more efficient for the result you aim to achieve.

Findings: I've found that I prefer reusing the same tools for various uses so learning the shortcut keys is a very useful tool for me. I've also found that some of the painting tools that I have already been doing can also be applied to photo editing, especially when using my drawing tablet.
