Special Task: Angpau Design Competition

Special Task : Angpau Design Competition

JayaGrocer offered an angpau design competition to Taylor's students that was based on the theme of togetherness. We were told to work in groups and my group consisted of Rachel Madeline, Sarah Li and myself. We took on this task individually but worked together to give each other feedback and helped improve each other's design. We wanted to submit more than 1 submission to increase our odds in the competition.

Of course, before proceeding with anything, we did some research first on what angpau packets generally looked like and how they were designed. Because of the theme of togetherness, I thought of starting with the word 圆满 which conveys the meaning. I also searched for Chinese New Year idioms that had a similar meaning or theme. I came across the idiom 花好月满, which carries the meaning of coming together. Additionally, the angpau packet would be for the year 2023, which happened to be the year of the rabbit according to the Chinese zodiac.

As with every task, we started out with sketching. Here is a compilation of all my sketches.

As seen in the sketches, I moved from the idiom idea to focus more on having the bunny motif also portray a sense of togetherness. From the sketches, I wanted to digitize 2 of the designs which will be shown below.

The first design is inspired by advice given by Mr Vinod about having the rabbits come together. I chose to have simplistic rabbits form the word "福" which is the Chinese character for fortune, a popular motif for angpau packet designs.

Initially, I only had the rabbits' outline form the character. It was then pointed out to me that the word could be difficult to decipher and read. Due to this, I added the character behind the rabbits to make them stand out clearly. I also used a simple outline of some of the rabbits for the back of the angpau so that it wasn't too plain nor too complicated.

The second design had a similar idea but was kept much more simpler by only showing the year on the backs of the rabbits.

Figure 1.5: Process of digitizing "2023" design, Week 12 (20/11/2022)

For this design, only 4 rabbits were needed as there are 4 numbers. I used gradients to make the rabbits stand out more while the numbers were of the exact same shade as the background.

Similar to the front, the back had a rabbit that was of the same color gradient but with a simple 福 instead. This was to match the front and back of the design.

Both these designs were submitted to the google form provided for contest entries, alongside other designs created by my group members as shown below.
