Project 2: Exercises
LECTURES

Week 1: Motion Graphics
Animated infographic, show information visually (typically using after effects
Motion graphics = Composition (graphics + typography) + Animation (movement + rhythm)
Steps to create a motion graphics:
1. Write a script
2. Moving onto storyboard (visualisation)
3. Move to design
4. Animate the final designs
Motion graphics can be placed under the umbrella of the animation but it also vastly differs. It aims to convey informational content rather than a story.
Text animation, vector animation, chart visualisation, and character animation are what make up motion graphics.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2A: Kinetic Typography

We were instructed to work on creating a kinetic typography lyric video for a song of our choosing. The song we chose after some discussion was the song Enemy by Imagine Dragons. However, we chose to use Renaeiry's cover of the song as her cover had a more orchestral sound and in a female sound which suited the song better as it is about the character of Jinx from Arcane.

From there, we split the lyrics into sections and claimed our parts. We also started looking at other videos for some design inspiration for our video.

Arnusha created a moodboard based on the references we compiled. We also decided on the font for the video to be Arcane Nine as that is similar to the font used in the show Arcane.

My part was the latter half of the chorus. A large part of it was mainly vocalisations and the vocals overlapped quite a bit in the mix as well. This caused me a bit of grief as I could only listen to the song for the timing which made me anxious that I was mishearing it. I also learned how to create the glitch effect from a tutorial on Youtube. Mainly though, I applied the tutorial we learned from Mr Martin about how to use null objects for the lyric animation.

Here is the final version of my part:

Arnusha compiled the final animation for the entire song and uploaded it to Youtube.

Project 2B: Animated Chart

This was a task that was completed in class. We were led through a tutorial on how to create an animated chart for infographics. I received the task of animating a bar chart. I completed the final version of it in class.

REFLECTION

This project was very interesting to me as it was my first exposure to After Effects and its tools and abilities. This task helped me to practice what I had learned in class and during the practical sessions. Immediately going from the practical exercises to trying to apply it on the kinetic typography video was illuminating and taught me to learn more than what was taught in class. I also found that Youtube tutorials are rather helpful when trying to bring the vision in my head to the project.
