LECTURES

Week 1: MIB briefing
This module is about the sound effects that suit the situation. May seem easy at first but requires time, effort and practice. Milestones in MIB are the submission deadlines. Think about the storyline for the atmosphere for the auditory imaging project to help with clarification of sounds needed.

Week 2: Sound Fundamentals
Sound- vibration of air molecules that stimulates our eardrums and perceived by the brain as sound; the vibration and propagation(movement) of the air molecules is sound waves. Psychoacoustics- study of subjective human perception of sounds; how we listen, our psychological responses, and the physiological impact of music and sound on the human nervous system.
Properties of sound:
1. Pitch (Hz) 2. Loudness 3. Timbre (quality of the sound)
4. Perceived duration (perceived speed of the sound overall)
5. Envelope (overall shape of the whole sound) 6. Spatialization (perceived sound in a 3D space)
Human hearing 20 Hz - 20 kHz; 20-250 Hz Bass, 5k-20k Hz Treble

Week 3: Sound Manipulation
Sound shaping is to change the quality and characteristics of a sound to sound like it is coming from a certain source, i.e. a voice speaking in real life vs a voice over the phone.
Echo and reverb is the result of sound waves bouncing off of the surroundings. The bigger the space, the more echo.

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise 1 - Sound matching

We were introduced to Adobe Audition and how to play around with parametric equalizer to equalise tracks. The exercise was to match the given edited tracks to the original (flat) music track provided using the parametric equalizer effect.

Exercise 2 - Sound shaping

This exercise taught us to shape a given audio sample to have the impression of being from different environments.

Raw audio (MP3)

On telephone effect mixdown (MP3)
From inside closet effect mixdown (MP3)
On walkie talkie effect mixdown (MP3)
Stadium announcement mixdown (MP3)
Bathroom stall mixdown (MP3)

Exercise 3 - Environment soundscape

We are given two concept art images and tasked to create a short clip of how the environment in the images would sound like using sound effects from online sources. The first image was meant to be done in class but I was absent so I mostly relied on my own past experience with video editing and with the feedback of my friends.

First environment concept art

The first image looks very high tech and looks like there are a lot of pipes. From this, I focused on finding steam and machinery sound effects along with a laser sound. All the sound effects I used came from the site https://freesound.org

First audition progress workspace

I received advice to add sound effects to reference the people in the image as well. Below is the final sound:

Second environment concept art

The second image combines both nature and technology. I used some of the electrical ambient noises from the first soundscape but combined it with light water ambience as well for the nature aspect.

Sounds for the movement of the soldiers and reloading their guns were also arranged within the soundscape. Below is the final sound:

FEEDBACK

Week 2
Specific feedback: While not 100 percent accurate, the adjustments are in the correct region.

Week 3
Specific feedback: Get familiar with your headphones to know its shortcomings and how to adjust based on them. The closet sound shaping has too much ambient noise and sounds like its coming from inside a moving vehicle. The walkie talkie sound shaping is distorted and loud enough but the treble is too high and should be reduced. Bathroom sound was too muted but the reverb was alright. The stadium sound could be pitched up and have more reflective echo.
