INSTRUCTIONS

Part 1 : Physical Collage

The first part of this project is to create a physical collage. I cut my materials from various fashion magazines.

Figure 1.1: Cut out collage materials, Week 1 (01/09/2022)

We were instructed to create 3 collage pre-compositions. I managed to create one during class and received feedback that it had a good composition.

I continued the other pre-compositions after class. I kept in mind Mr Fauzi's advice and removed the already used materials to avoid repetition if I could manage it.

From these 3 compositions, Mr Fauzi chose the first as the best for the final outcome. Here is the final composition pasted down as the final work.

Part 2 : Digital Collage

The second part involves creating a digital collage from the images provided to us. As with the previous collage, first we have to create 3 compositions.

Figure 1.6: Images provided for digital collage composition, Week 3 (15/09/2022)

This first composition was made based on the idea of yin and yang, of asymmetrical symmetry.

Figure 1.7: Digital collage composition 1, Week 3 (15/09/2022)

I struggled with completing this composition. I tried using the rule of thirds guide to help me but it didn't really work out initially. Finally, I ended up with this outcome.

Figure 1.8: Digital collage composition 2, Week 4 (21/09/2022)

The last composition is my attempt at composing with the golden ratio. I also tried to create patterns and visuals using the texture images provided.

Figure 1.9: Digital collage composition 3, Week 4 (21/09/2022)

From the above 3 compositions, it was decided that composition #3 is the best. Using the original Photoshop file, we are to add adjustment layers to the best digital collage composition to improve it. After playing around with adjustment layers, this is the final outcome for the digital collage exercise.

I used the adjustment layers taught to us to make the overall colours more vibrant and saturated. Additionally, I used adjustment layers with clipping masks on specific layers such as the fish and leaves to make those even brighter so that they wouldn't blend in with the already bright background.

After review, my final submissions for Project 1: Collage Design are as below:

REFLECTION

Exploration: In this project, I explored how to join seemingly unrelated images together to create a composition. Learning my style of composition and what makes a good composition. The exercises were straightforward and kept us on track on a weekly basis.

Observations: Throughout the project, I learnt to step back from my work to look at it from an outsider's lens. I have a habit of feeling that my compositions should be filled with details when it doesn't always have to be so.

Findings: I have realized that it takes analysis and looking at various examples to learn what makes a good composition.I also need to be more analytical when criticizing my own work.
